Kim Schoenberger - finally finished alphabet one!

Firstly, I must apologise for my lack of presence with ALaW the last few months, 'tis the usual story of work overload....

Doing catch up with my first alphabet and it is finished!!!  I am very happy with the outcome after which alot of brain power and contemplation went into the final touches of the light box to make it work effectively and look aesthetically appealing.

As this was my first attempt with making a light box and having no idea of 'how to' make one there were several things that didn't work which I had to reconsider! Not wanting to glue the pianola scroll down or frame the box, I decided to sandwich the scroll between two sheets of clear plexiglass raised above the light box with a 'pin' system.

 

 

Finding the exact size and system for the lighting was a challenge, which resulted in several trips and exchanges at the local hardware store, not to mention the different width cuts of timber - I eventually got it right!!! 

 

... when I found this lighting system, it fit perfectly like a glove, even the extension cord distance - if only I'd found this system first go!

Now that is finished, I best make a start on alphabet two!

Kim Schoenberger - MNOPQ - RSTUV

I'm late and early! April's letters MNOPQ and RSTUV for May. Continuing on with my polka dot pianola scroll with the letters being cut out creating a negative space. 

My research into the light box idea so far is looking to be a costly exercise!  I do want to finish the piece in this way and have been to many different stores for advice - I have a few more places to check out, however at the moment - I'm in the procrastination phase ...

Once again I am late! Seems to be the norm for me these days, funny thing I used to be so punctual - not sure where that went to.... ? :-\

So my post today is both February and March and an additional picture of how the piece is coming along. Still working on the polka dot theme...

Starting to take shape all rolled out - A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, I, J

I've started looking into the finishing of the piece, this one's a bit more technical and I believe it's going to take a little more time to nut out what I'll be needing in turns of the final touches and from whom. I want to create a light box effect like they appear in these photo's, hopefully it'll work out - things always sound great in 'theory'

Ok, starting off with my 'dotty' alphabet - I'm taking on a different approach this time, instead of having every letter different I am chosing to do each the same and to be suitated on an ole pianola scroll defined in their 7cm x 7cm square by dots. Each letter will appear the same but the 'dotty' look will come from not only the border but from the formation of the musical notes creating a random pattern of a negative 'dotty' space. To take full advantage of this negative 'dotty' space I want to finish the piece off in a box like frame creating a light box effect, hence enhancing the negative space.

I quiet like the look, it almost has a kinda binary look to it.

I haven't quiet decided whether to cut it down to size (complete alphabet in one sheet) or keep it intact as a full scroll or atleast keep the top feeder part time will tell I guess, when time comes to framing...

Hi there,

I live in a gorgeous part of the world on the Sunshine Coast Hinterland, Queensland, Australia on an acre of land with my partner Glen and Mini Fox Terrier named, Max. It's mostly green and lush all year round, allowing me to grow an abundant supply of organic produce. We like to live simply and happily...

I work as a full time artist - Sculptor and Ceramist - my sculptural works consist of rusted welded metal, steel and found objects welcoming the 'laws of chance' whilst assembling. My ceramics can be large, boisterous, and rustic made with heavily grogged clay, or, very fine and delicate made in porcelain. Sometimes I combine both clay and metal, often going off the beaten track to explore different mediums and techniques.

Although I am extremely disciplined, freedom (of expression) rates highly on my list, resulting in an unorthodox approach to my arts practice and daily routine. I love every minute of being creative and an artist, and chose to continue to do so for the rest of my time here on earth!
